19.What is a good GRE score?
Many people search this question. They normally don’t get an appropriate answer for this question. I am trying to put this as simple as possible.
A good score on the Revised GRE generally depends on the program that you are going to opt for or the field that you are interested in for pursuing your MS.
Generally, applicants admitted to the top 10 Engineering programs last year had an average GRE quant score of about a 161. However, applicants admitted to the top 10 Education programs had an average GRE quant score about a 152. You can yourself see the difference. So what you need to do is identify your program that you want to pursue and identify the good GRE score for that particular program in different colleges by which you can get a clear picture.
It happens sometimes that some universities are more interested towards quant than towards the verbal section. So you need to do quite a bit of a research to find the colleges. Also try contacting them or the students those who are already studying in thise universities as they will be able to provide a big picture of the admission process. With this knowledge you can set a target score that you need to achieve in GRE.
So coming back to the question again, What is a good score? I consider a good score in GRE is 160 in Quant and 150 in Verbal. This score is an ideal score that will open up lot of opportunities for getting into a standard universities in USA.
Below I have just provided the range that I got by searching and asking people, The range is about which colleges to apply if you have one of the following scores: -
Top 50: Quantitative Score Range for Admitted Students: 159 – 166 Verbal Score Range for Admitted students: 154-160
Top 51-100: Quantitative Score Range for Admitted Students: 156 – 160 Verbal Score Range for Admitted Students: 149 – 152
Top 101 – 150: Quantitative Score Range for Admitted Students: 155 – 159 Verbal Score Range for Admitted Students: 150 – 153
Also keep in mind that if you are going for further studies towards Engineering stream then colleges normally look for Quant section score rather than the Verbal Section.
Most Universities actually don’t mention any cut-off but to be on a safer safe you must score 160 in Quant and 150 in Verbal to get a good university.
